Professor Tim Sherwood named Dean of the College of Creative Studies
In December, UCSB chancellor Henry Yang announced the appointment of UCSB computer science professor Timothy Sherwood as the new dean of the College of Creative Studies (CCS), saying, “In his more than two decades at UC Santa Barbara, Professor Sherwood has established an outstanding record of service to our campus community.”
A fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Sherwood brings to CCS a wide range of campus experience, having served previously as UCSB’s Associate Vice Chancellor for Research and as a member of the Academic Senate Executive Council. He also previously won both the university’s Distinguished Teaching Award (2012) and the Outstanding Graduate Mentor Award (2021).
During two years as CCS interim dean, Sherwood has focused on adding new faculty, building connectivity and community when campus opened when the COVID-19 closure ended, finalizing the launch of Marine Science as the college’s ninth major, deepening academic ties across campus, revitalizing common spaces, and supporting Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) scholars and the annual CCS Research and Creative Activities Conference (RACA-CON), among his many other official activities.
In addition to his decanal duties, Sherwood serves with CS assistant professor Jonathan Balkind to co-direct the UCSB ArchLab, which is focused on exploring new and unexpected ways of organizing computer systems to enhance security, energy efficiency, sustainability, agility, and performance.
Perhaps equally important as his academic rigor and research excellence, Sherwood brings a gregarious, encouraging, and welcoming personality to his many roles, which is especially appealing to students and research colleagues.
