Professor Fred Chong awarded NSF grant to study quantum error correction schemes
Prof. Fred Chong is co-principal investigator with Prof. Ken Brown (GATech) on a new $480K National Science Foundation research grant to study quantum error correction schemes. The main challenge for building a quantum computer is that quantum components are prone to error. Chong and Brown will investigate surface codes, a new class of error correction codes for quantum computers. Surface codes are ensemble codes that more efficiently code redundancy into large collections of quantum bits. They have the potential to make quantum computers significantly easier to build. Chong and Brown will examine how surface codes can be applied to realistic quantum computer architectures and physical devices to help bridge the gap between current physical hardware and large-scale quantum algorithms. This work is in collaboration with Sergey Bravyi at the IBM TJ Watson research center.
