Prof. Amr El Abbadi joins expert panel on computer science diversity
“What would society gain from having more women and minorities code?” That question was the subject of a documentary titled, "Code: Debugging the Gender Gap,” presented by the UCSB Center for Information Technology and Society. “Code” explores how cultural mindsets, stereotypes, educational hurdles and sexism all play roles in the national crisis that will see one million unfilled software engineering jobs in the U.S. by 2020.
Computer Science Professor Amr El Abbadi along with other panelists and “Code” Director/Producer Robin Hauser Reynolds engaged in discussion after the screening. Among the many audience participants were UCSB Computer Science Professor and Department Chair Ambuj Singh and UCSB Computer Science Professor Phill Conrad, who also discussed various departmental efforts to increase student diversity in the field.
