The paper entitled “Hyder — A Transactional Record Manager for Shared Flash”, co-authored by Ph.D. student Sudipto Das (with Philip Bernstein and Colin Reid at Microsoft), was given the Best Paper Award at the 5th Biennial Conference on Innovative Data Systems Research (CIDR) 2011. Hyder is an incubation at Microsoft to create a high performance transactional database system that scales out without partitioning, by leveraging network-attached shared flash storage devices and high-speed data center networks. This paper presents an architectural overview of Hyder, details of its main components, and an analysis of its performance. Sudipto worked on this project as an intern in Summer 2010, contributing the performance analysis and various enhancements to the design.

The Conference on Innovative Data Systems Research (CIDR) was started in 2002 to provide the database community with a prestigious venue for presenting innovative data systems architectures. CIDR does not compete with the established conferences presenting rigorous treatises in established areas; rather its goal is to air radically new ideas. CIDR is a systems-oriented conference, complementary in its mission to the mainstream database conferences, such as SIGMOD and VLDB, emphasizing the systems architecture perspective. The conference draws researchers and practitioners from academia and industry to explore and debate the latest ideas in the field.
