Course Description

Welcome to graduate school!  You’ve made it!  Now that you’re here, this seminar is an opportunity for you to take a step back and figure out what this grad school thing is all about and how you can be successful.   This 595 is meant to orient you, our first year grad students, to our department and to graduate school in general.  Each week we will cover a different topic on this subject.  A panel of current graduate students, as well as 1-2 faculty members, will typically lead each class.  They will each share their insights on the topic of the week, and then there will be ample time for Q&A and general discussion.  The seminar is informal, and will give you an opportunity to interact with and get to know other first years, as well as current department members.  Please note this seminar does not fulfill a 595 “research seminar” course requirement.  We hope to see you at our first meeting on September 25!
