Richert Wang

Richert Wang, associate teaching professor in the Department of Computer Science and the College of Creative Studies, is one of six recipients of UCSB's Distinguished Teaching Award for 2023-24. The award recognizes senate and non-senate faculty who demonstrate outstanding achievements in research and the teaching mission of the university. His students describe his courses as welcoming, challenging, and rewarding. One former student commented, "I came to college to be pushed to my limits and catalyze improvement, and Dr. Wang provides students with that perfect balance of support and difficulty that prompts learning." Dr. Wang’s curricular innovations include the restructuring and scaling of multiple lower-division CS courses to improve accessibility and support for students across campus. He serves as the founding advisor for UCSB’s interdisciplinary Game Development club, as the advisor to the Data Science club, and is co-developer of codewit.us, a project to improve the to improve accessibility, relatability, and retention rates for under-represented students in CS.
