Title: Wireless Broadband Technology & Services: Emerging Market Context

Abstract:

The explosive growth in wireless technology and mobile subscriptions
with improved wireless device capabilities should prompt stakeholders of
the wireless value chain to consider the deployment of low cost wireless
broadband infrastructure and socially relevant services. The preference
of wireless technology and wireless devices as the medium to information
access and services in developing and emerging markets is evident from
the recent statistics released by CTIA, GSMA, ITU and the wireless
industry. The seminar will discuss choice of low cost wireless broadband
technology comparing three alternative technologies 3GPP/LTE, IEEE802.XX
WiMAX and WiFi Networking Technologies. The seminar will address the
effect of recent Next Generation network trends such as collaborative
networking, cognitive radio and white space technologies with digital
dividend spectrum allocation as capacity and affordability improvements
for the provision of innovative wireless broadband services in rural
communities. Wireless broadband technology & service deployment seldom
considers end-to-end aspects, sustainability and the context of rural
communities: where the deployment environment is rural community
customers who are sparsely populated and with low income. Finally a
model for the optimization of wireless broadband technology and services
with respect to rural communities will be presented, citing into
wireless research collaborations which CSIR Meraka is promoting with
universities and research organizations.

Bio:

Fisseha Mekuria, has acquired a B.E. degree from Chennai India and an
Msc & PhD. degrees in Wireless communications & signal Processing from
Linköping University (LiTH) in Sweden. He has over 20 years of academic
and industrial research experience, in Wireless communications & ICT. He
was a senior research scientist for 10 years at Ericsson Mobile
Communications R&D Lab in Sweden. During which time he has developed
over 12 US & European (EPO) patents in the areas of mobile computing
Platforms & Communications Networks. Dr. Mekuria has also played a
crucial role in commercialization of research outputs as mentor in the
IDEON research Park in Sweden, and has been recipient of several
research grants & IEEE nominations from the mobile & ICT industry for
research and academic education in the wireless computing field. As
Professor in Wireless Computing & ICT Systems, at several Universities,
he has been involved in teaching, development of curriculum,
organization of research groups and taking leadership role in research
and educational capacity building in Europe and several African
countries. He has also been involved in the building of mobile
applications software development labs and wireless-networking
laboratories in resource limited African countries. For this work he has
been nominated for the prestigious IEEE continuing education award.
Several Patents, IEEE/ACM publications & book chapters in wireless
communications has been the result of his work. His research interests
are next generation Wireless & mobile computing systems, modeling and
analysis of secure and intelligent mobile platforms & services, wireless
broadband and ICT for sustainable socio-economic development. Prof.
Mekuria is a Senior Member of the IEEE and is at present a Principal
Research Scientist, and research leader for a multidisciplinary research
on Wireless Computing & Networking research, at the Council for
Scientific and Industrial Research, CSIR-Meraka Institute, Pretoria,
South Africa.
