Byungkyu (Jay) Kang received a Ph.D. in Computer Science at the University of California at Santa Barbara under the supervision of Prof. Tobias Höllerer and Dr. John O'Donovan, and currently holds a visiting research scholar position at the IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center in New York, United States. He focuses on both social and human-centered computing (HCI) and is particularly interested in data mining, artificial intelligence and visualization. His research on Intelligent User Interfaces focuses on modeling, identifying and recommending reliable, high-quality information on social media.

His work has been supported by the National Science Foundation and the U.S. Army Research Laboratory. He received the Best Paper Award at IEEE SocialCom in 2013. He holds a MS in Computer Science from UCSB and a bachelor degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Chung-ang University. Dr. Kang has also worked as a researcher and a system engineer in industry, at Adobe Research, Yahoo! Labs, KIST, Samsung, and IBM.

His research interests revolve around Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), with focus on data analytics, machine learning and visualization. The main research theme for his Ph.D. was to develop intelligent user interfaces to cope with information quality and scalability issues. Other research interests include Natural Language Processing (NLP), Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition.
