I believe that social networks bring us both challenges and opportunities. For challenges, we are faced with the Information Overload. It is difficult to find out information we really need, in the limited time and from so big user-generated data. To overcome this challenge, personalized recommendation is an effective way to assist information access. Different from traditional recommendation techniques, recommendation in social networks can be benefited from the rich social media, such as tags and social structures.
For opportunities, much knowledge can be discovered from rich social media, especially from the big user-generated text data. There are many interesting topics is this area, such as tracking and reasoning online sentiment changes based on Twitter text stream, summarizing users’ comments or reviews, and extracting social interaction networks from descriptive text.
